In John 12:24-26, Jesus tells us that if we are going to be the true followers of Christ that we claim to be, our actions and affections must be like His. 

In verses 27 and 28, Jesus said, Now is My soul troubled; and what shall I say? Father save Me from this hour: but for this cause came I to this hour. Father, glorify Your name. These words are a great help to us, because Jesus suffered the same emotional and mental conflict that we know so well yet He did so without sin. 

So, it is clear to see that emotional and mental conflict is not in itself sinful – even when our flesh withdraws itself from the things of life that seems unavoidable that response is not necessarily evil. There was no sin in Jesus and these words bring no sin into His heart, this teaches us that the emotions we feel and the commotion that sometimes fills our soul is not sinful, it is simply humanity realizing it’s reliance on God’s sustaining power and emptying itself before almighty God.

The Lord’s words must become our own: Father, glorify Your name. 

By those words we must mean, as Jesus meant, Father, if I must sacrifice everything, glorify Your name through my sacrifice. Father, if I succeed in any endeavor, glorify Your name in my success. Father, if the day ahead brings sunshine or rain, glorify Your name in the day that You have given me to live. The words, Father, glorify Your name are to us like the pillar of cloud given to Israel to shade us from the heat of the day and the pillar of fire to guide us through the darkness of the night.
